It’s another week, and another day for new music. For those of you who are unfamiliar, digital streaming service Spotify highlights the newest music from a whole range of artists every Tuesday on the playlist whose title speaks for itself, “New Music Tuesday.”
The playlist does a fantastic job of highlight a whole range of artists and genres, doing their best to try to reach out to listeners from all walks of life. Whether you like rap, indie, country, or (especially in this weeks case) reggae, Spotify does it best to transcend all different types of music to appeal to all audiences.
Last week, there seemed to be a focus on female artists, and this week, the trend continues. This Tuesday’s playlist features highlights from Leighton Meester, Selena Gomez, Lucy Hale, Gwen Stefani, and Iggy Azalea, just to name a few. Showing that not all female artists are the same, each new song contains an identity of its own. Leighton Meester’s “Runaway” is a pretty, easy listen that refuses to identify with any one genre (and this is in no way a bad thing,) “Lie A Little Better” by Lucy Hale satisfies with a slight country twang, and Gwen Stefani kicks her way back into the music scene with “Baby Don’t Lie,” in which she blends her signature style with the sounds of the modern alternative scene. Ladies continue to carry the torch, and it seems they’re not stopping any time soon.
The talented females aren’t the only gems featured on this weeks list. As always, Spotify chooses wisely, putting together their playlist using artists that are both new and forerunners of the scene. Scrolling down your screen, you’ll find old familiar names like Usher (who kills it, as always), Boys II Men (who the author didn’t know were even still together), Calvin Harris (featured heavily on last weeks playlist), Gloriana, and Imagine Dragons mixed with artists you may have not heard of before, such as Magic! and Hozier. Speaking of the later, their song “Take Me To Church” is one of the highlights of this weeks New Music Tuesday and is definitely worth a listen, if not a full download.
What you’re going to read next is going to sound like a confusing mess, but stick with it. The track that truly stands out this week is a cover of “A Day In The Life,” originally made famous by The Beatles. Tackling the song is a team made up of The Flaming Lips, Miley Cyrus, and New Fumes. They manage to pay tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time by staying true to the original material while still adding in modern elements and making the track their own. It’s unique and unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.
If you aren’t already subscribed to New Music Tuesday, you should go do so. It’s one of the best ways to get the hottest new music.
