September 22, 1994. What happened then? A simple show about six friends appeared for its pilot episode. Ross Geller, Monica Geller, Chandler Bing, Phoebe Buffay, Joey Tribbiani, and Rachel Green all came together and for 10 years gave Americans a show of humor and romance. The constant on-again off-again of Ross and Rachel was one of many things to discuss of the mid-90’s. I remember watching this with my mom some nights when I was younger. Of course, it takes a slightly older mind to understand a lot of humor that show has.

The shows series finale aired on May 6, 2004. Despite having seen it countless times, it still brings tears to my eyes – it was the end of an era, so to speak. All of the relationships and fights the shows final episode has enough resolution to make every watcher feel complete as the door literally shuts on this group of friends.

For those of you who haven’t seen “Friends,” let me give you a brief rundown of the show. No spoilers. Promise.

Monica Geller – chef extraordinaire, control freak and stickler for neatness – runs into her old friend Rachel Green. The two soon end up living together and Ross Geller, paleontologist and Monica’s brother, develops a crush on Rachel that goes on throughout the series.

Across the hall is Chandler Bing, a funny guy who doesn’t have the best of luck with women. He is the comedian of the group. No one truly knows what he does for work, but it involves numbers. His roommate Joey Tribbiani is an aspiring actor. Working his way through play after play, he finally gets an agent and really starts getting roles he’s only dreamed of. These two together may not seem like a perfect match and like every pair of roommates have their fights, but every time find their way back to each other.

Finally there is Phoebe Buffay. In one word Phoebe is weird – possibly a result of being abandoned with her twin sister by a suicidal mother. Her lovely songs, which she plays and writes herself, are quite popular among the group. Songs such as Smelly Cat is everyone’s all time favorite. You see her making it big with multiple men and eventually finding the love of her life after countless suitors.

For those of you who haven’t seen “Friends,” I highly recommend it. This show was popular when it was first premiering and is still popular today. “Friends” inspired at least four other shows that I know of. Anyone hear of “How I Met Your Mother” or “Scrubs” or even “Big Bang Theory?” The parallels between these shows are incredibly similar. If you like either of these shows I would dare say, you’d enjoy “Friends.” This fantastic show comes to Netflix January 1, 2015. Enjoy.
