Men’s Tennis started its Spring season this past January. The Aggies have had a very good season thus far, with a record of 9-2. Their next match is this Friday, Feb. 13 at 11:00 against Northern Colorado.
The Team at a Glance: There are nine members of the team this year who come from all over the World. Five of the nine members have hometowns that are from out of the United States. This is also a young team, with seven of the nine members being either a sophomore or freshman. The members of the team are: Jaime Barajas and Andrew Nakajima (freshman); Dennis Baumgartner, Tomas Cosmai, Karan Salwan, Sebastian Schneider, and Jack Swindells (sophomore); Matt Sweet and Marcus Fritz (senior). The team is coached by Head Coach Clancy Shields, with Andy Magee as the Assistant Coach and John Moore as the Volunteer Coach.
Player Highlights: One of the leaders of this young team is Freshman Jaime Barajas, who was recently named the Mountain West Tennis Player of the week for the week of January 28th, 2015. Also honored was Sophomore Sebastian Schneider, who was named the America First Credit Union Student Athlete of the Week for January 12th, 2015.
Match Highlights: Recently the Aggies had three tournaments down in Arizona, in which they finished 2-1. The loss is only the second one of the season, the first coming from Utah. One of the most notable matches was against Montana on January 30th, in which the Aggies won the match, 7-0. It was shortly after this that the Aggies were announced being ranked #73 in the nation.
So what is next for the Aggies? They have a match THIS FRIDAY at 11:00 against Northern Colorado here at home. After that, the matches will be on the road until March 20th, when they will face San Francisco. Follow your Aggies on www.usu.edu/athletics for all your updates.
