Spring Season recently started for both of the Tennis teams, and our Aggies have been having a fantastic season thus far. The Women’s team is 4-2 overall, with a perfect record of 3-0 with matches at home.
The team at a glance: The team consists of ten members who come from all over the Country. Members of the team are: Maggie O’Meara, Meghan Lyall, Erin Freeman, and Sabrina Demerath (freshman); Katie Sweet, Lexi Turley, and Nini Guensler (sophomore); Kallie Sperry and Amber Stuhlmann (Junior); and McKenzie Davis (senior). The team is led by Sean McInerney as the Head Coach and Jaci West as the Assistant coach.
Player Highlights: The definite leader of this team is Senior McKenzie Davis. She is 14-6 for the season overall. Davis has been honored with many awards this season, including the America First Credit Union Student Athlete of the Week. At the start of the season, it was also announced that Davis is the number one ranked player in the Mountain Region. Overall, the team is fairly young, with seven of its ten members being either freshman or sophomores. This can prove to be an advantage for the Aggie’s as the years progress because it will allow the team to grow together.
Match Highlights: The definite highlight of the season has been the match against BYU on January 28th. BYU was ranked at #55 in the country as the Aggies went into this match down in Provo. This was the first loss for the Cougars at home since April of 2013. “This was a tremendous team effort, and I am so proud of our effort. BYU is a great team, and we found a way to beat them in Provo which made it even sweeter,” said USU head coach Sean McInerney. “We have come a long way as a program, and this was a huge step forward for us. We expected to win and we got the job done.”
So what is up next for the Women’s Tennis team? The next home match is March 6th, 2015 against Idaho at 11:00 a.m. Otherwise, the team is in the midst of a string of away games. Support the team by following them online at www.usu.edu/athletics. Good luck Aggies!!
