It’s a tricky business to come up with a collection of themed music. I was pawing around on Soundcloud today, and realized that I don’t have to choose songs–I can choose entire groups of songs! That’s so meta, right? Plus I can talk about one of my favorite things in music: the transition. It’s great to hear one song from start to finish, but what happens when you put songs on top of each other and it actually sounds good? What happens when you can’t even tell when a new song comes on because of the blissfully smooth movement of similar beats? What if you cut a piece out of one song (because you’re a crazy talented DJ) and paste it into the middle of another so that a new song is created? Mixes are glorified playlists, in fact, everybody who has ever tried to put songs together on a playlist makes a creative choice about how they sound in relation to each other. It can be a broad grouping–Country music, for example (not my favorite, but you do you)–or even a narrow grouping (our focus in these articles is often such a narrowing of curation.) The five or so hours I plan on throwing your way today are all excellent mixes, created by quality DJs that I know, love, and trust. I’ve listened to each of these multiple times and It’ll be a long time before I’m sick of them. Here–this is The Mix.

This is the Blisswave.

1. No.Sleep 07 by Odesza

Odesza is one of my favorite artists. They post these “No.Sleep” mixes every once in a while on Soundcloud. This is number 7, but if you really like what you hear there are six more of them available. Pay special attention to the transitions in this mix. They’re pitch perfect.

2. 20Syl for Hypetrak: Stack Patterns

3. FKJ for Eton Messy Records: FKJ

This one comes from French producer FKJ, who likes to mix together a sort of laid back funk/soul with electronic sound. His samples are genius, and the beats he chooses fit together perfectly.

4. Stwo for Hypetrak: From Paris With Love

This one starts out on the greatest chill note, and keeps up the vibes for the entire thing. I found this one only recently, but I’m really glad that I did. Stwo is one of my favorite artists. We play him on our radio show all the time.

  • Stwo – Quiet Life

5. MrSuicideSheep – Expanding Horizons

Despite the odd name of the DJ (MrSuicideSheep–we’re not really sure why a sheep would be suicidal, or why its name requires such a prefix, but he does good work, so we can’t be too angry with him.) this is another fantastic mix. It’s much more laid back than Stack Patterns or No.Sleep, definitely good for studying or just relaxing.
