Last Saturday the Asian Student Association hosted their annual “Finding Asia” event. This event featured a meal and performances by the students. There were also mini-lectures on various aspects of Asian culture, such as fairy tales. This event was showcased Asian culture and provided an opportunity for the students to perform and have some fun.

The event encompassed a range of different performances, from instrumental music to rap, along with dancing and a couple of relay games involving the audience. There was also poetry and discussions on Asian fairytales and discrimination.

The dinner, which was catered by USU Dining Services, featured Asian cuisine, including spicy pumpkin curry and sweet sticky rice with bananas for dessert. Students experienced a variety of flavors and gained a greater appreciation for the Asian culture.

The décor at this event was well-thought-out, from the paper lanterns to the gold-painted paper mache elephants. Even the tables were thoughtfully decorated with fish bowls and plants.

From the start of the event, attendees were immersed music and a warm atmosphere. Every performance was done with energy and care. Those performing cared about their performance and it showed in the quality of the event.

When asked about the purpose of hosting Finding Asia, there were a variety of responses. Preserving their culture and educating others were the main focuses, along with having fun and helping people to experience Asian cultures.

ASA President Amber Lam’s favorite thing about ASA is “the unity that comes with it.” This sentiment was echoed by several others involved in the event, from performers to the backstage crew.

Among other elements in the event, the outfits worn by the performers shined. The intricate traditional outfits worn by some of the performers contributed to the event. With the music and dancing, these outfits really helped showcases some of the wonderful elements of the Asian cultures.

“Finding Asia” focused on the richness, beauty and traditions of Asian cultures. This opportunity to learn more and experience other cultures was appreciated by the attendees. When asked about their favorite parts of the event, many stated that they enjoyed the music and dancing, while others enjoyed the food.

One of the most powerful moments in this event was a video shown near the end which featured interview with many of the members and leaders of the ASA talking about their experiences, discrimination and what it’s like to be Asian in America.
