Green Jello. Funeral Potatoes. Fry Sauce. Sundance. Skiing and Snowboarding. High School Musical. Temple Square; all things that are uniquely Utah. However, Utah is also known for some of its funny phrases. Here are some that I came up with, but if you think of any please comment below!
The lack of “T”: Most Utahns are guilty of this wordage, myself included. “Mountain”, “Layton”, and “Bountiful” all sound more like “Mounain”, “Layon”, and “Bouniful”.
Substitute Cuss Words: “Dang it”, “Shoot”, “Heck”, and “Oh my Gosh!” are phrases commonly heard here in Utah. The reason for these words is explained in m next point….
Mormon Lingo: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is very prevalent here, and because of that there are a lot of words that are used in daily conversation that are associated with the Church: Stake Center, Relief Society, Mutual, and Institute are just a couple of the words used on a consistent basis.
Utahn Phrases: “Here’s the thing…”, “YOLO”, “Like” (or other filler words).
The grid system. The only way a city should ever be laid out. Streets run N.S and E.W and are numbered. Getting from point A to B is a step of “Go over one street, and down three.” None of this “Well you are going to take the curve on Jefferson, past the courthouse, stay left at the light, then you want to get on Richard Ave., which turns into Adams Blvd. about half way down.”
Happy Valley. Debated whether Cache or Utah valley is the true happy valley.
Really anything spoken word from Southern Utah. The Panguitch area especially.
Potato Bugs.
This is what the world calls a potato bug.
(Jerusalem Cricket)
This is what Utah calls a potato bug
(Wood louse/Pill bug/Rolly Polly)
So what do you think? What other Utah Jargon do you hear/use? Comment below!
