Elisabeth-Anne Ashby, author of the “Little Brother, Big Brother” article in the BYU Student Newspaper, has come out as apologetic after the recent defeat of BYU by the team she referred to as “little brother.” Ashby has attributed her error to the fact that she has no siblings of her own and therefore does not understand the concept of “little brothers.”
The article, published in Friday’s issue of The Universe, BYU’s student newspaper, referred to the rivalry between USU and BYU as “mismatched,” stating that the rivalry exists more in the fans’ perspective than in the actual skill level of the teams.
Ashby is coming out now saying that she was misunderstood by her readers and attributed the misunderstanding to her growing up as an only child. “It’s hard being an only child in Provo, you miss out on a lot of experiences.” Ashby continued by stating that she originally meant the “Big Brother, Little Brother” relationship to be mismatched in USU’s favor. “The only concept I have of sibling relations is what I have read in the Book of Mormon. Nephi is the ‘little brother’ but he is way cooler and stronger than his older brothers.”
Ashby referenced a particular story within The Book of Mormon, a religious book studied at BYU, in which the youngest of four brothers, Nephi, consistently proves to be better and stronger than his older siblings. “I thought all little brothers were better than their older ones, like it just gets better with time or something.”
Ashby now regrets the misunderstanding caused by her article and hopes that BYU fans will forgive the false hopes caused by her article. “I knew the entire time that BYU was going to lose, that’s why I said they were the ‘big brother,’ I’m just sorry people misinterpreted it.”
The game, just as Ashby had predicted in her article, ended with an one-sided victory in favor of the “little brother,” USU.
