This Valentine’s day, it is reported that an all-time high of 39% of couples will be breaking up. This percentage comes from what started as a simple school project.
Jake Myer, a student that took part in the project, took some time to talk to us.
“The poll was just supposed to get a percentage of how many singles and couples there would be on Valentine’s Day,” Myer said. “We kind of added the breakup question as a joke, but people actually admitted to planning for a breakup.”
When we asked how many people participated in the survey, Myer responded, “Everyone in our class, so about 500 people. It’s a pretty good group size.”
We decided to ask what students thought of the poll. Katie Daye responded, “I had a friend who just got dumped up a few days ago, so I don’t think that statistic is very surprising. It’s really stupid though. I think guys that do stuff like shouldn’t have girlfriends to start with.”
Freddy Picker said, “I think everyone is missing the point. So many people forget that there is another holiday on the exact same day. Singles Awareness Day is just as important if not more so. There isn’t anything better to remind you of how single you really are than breaking up on Singles Awareness Day. I wouldn’t be surprised if most people that broke up on this day did it to become single.”
We were able to interview a student who took the survey and admitted to planning on breaking up on Valentine’s Day. He chose to remain anonymous, so we’ll call him J. J said, “I just don’t want to spend a ton of money and a whole lovey-dovey day with my girlfriend. I don’t know, I just hate this holiday and the expectations that come with it.”
In the poll, it was also found that those breaking up with their partner were 87% men and 13% women.
