Looking for that next app to waste time on. Tired of scrolling the same old facebook feed while pooping. Try one of these instead. Here are your App Reviews for the week of 10.19.

1. Heavenstrike Rivals:

Square Enix is the developer behind everything from Final Fantasy 7 to the newest Tomb Raider game. Heavenstrike is their answer to the question “what if you took characters from Shakespeare, English history, and anything else you could think of and put them in a game of chess/backgammon?” It’s one part Pokémon, one part eleventh grade literature class, and one part Final Fantasy Tactics.

Here’s how it works:

Every game takes place on a board of 21 squares, organized in a 7×3 triangle. The goal is to get your units across the board to attack your enemy. Some units travel several spaces at once, while others cover a short distance, but can attack with a ranged attack. Healers can keep your units alive, and mages can cause massive amounts of damage to multiple players.

The game really starts getting fun when you build a team around a theme or start participating in player vs. player event matches for special units. There are worldwide contests ever weekend and events throughout the week.

I’ve been playing for a couple months now: Here’s my all-star team:

(And yes! That’s Shakespeare second from the left in the top row).

2. Boom Dots:

If Heavenstrike combines Shakespeare and English History with chess, Boom Dots combines dots with I don’t know . . . explosions. It’s a super simple game. You shoot dots at bigger dots.

There are some intricacies. You can change the ball type, get extra points for a perfect hit and the game gets harder the longer it goes. But other than that, it’s pretty simple.

Review: 2.5/5

3. Hunter Island

Hunter Island is IOS’s answer to Pokémon. It’s a game where you travel from city to city collecting monsters called not-pokémons. It’s pretty standard. There are over 300 monsters to collect and level up. Some of them are good, there’s a penguin dressed like a mafia stereotype.

I don’t really feel like saying much else about this game.
